BLATE PAPES
What is a Blate Pape? Plus

A Blate Pape is a thin, edible film made from only potato starch. They're used for taking servings of powdered herbs, mushrooms, supplements and medications.

Blate comes from the term "oblate" (or oburāto in Japanese), which means medicinal wafer. Pape is short-hand for paper.

In Japan, "oblates" have been used for over a century as a way to take medications without tasting them. Learn more about Japanese oblates and edible film in our article.

Expanding on this idea, Blate Papes allow the quick and tasteless consumption of any powder or oil.

Watch our latest how to use video to see how they work!

Why would I want to eat paper? Plus

Although they may seem like paper, they're actually a thin, dried gel! So when they touch water, they soak back into a gel-substance. That's the secret way our films make it easy to take your powdered products!

Up until now, most people have done one of two things:

  1. They pay a high premium for capsulized or tablet-pressed supplements.
  2. They buy pre-made powdered formulas to be mixed in water.

These contain unnecessary additives, fillers and binders and sometimes even carcinogens*!

They both cost a lot more, while providing a lot less of the useful ingredients. People do this because they're a quick convenient way of taking their supplements. But now our edible films can hold more than traditional capsules and they make it just as easy to take your powders as taking capsules would be.

You simply spoon in your powder, dip it and swallow it with water.

What advantages are there to using Blate Papes? Plus

Advantages include:

  • Avoiding the taste of powdered supplements, herbs, and medications
  • Saving money
  • Saving time
  • Avoiding unwanted fillers, chemicals and known carcinogens
  • Holding 5x more than the average capsule
  • Being easier than filling capsules or pressing tablets
  • Facilitating the use of personalized supplement mixes

Also..

  • They make pills easier to swallow by becoming slippery and gliding down
  • They can hold oil in the same way as dry powder
  • You can effectively destroy anyone in a cinnamon challenge
How much powder can I put in a Blate Pape? Plus

We recommend to only use as much powder as you’re comfortable with. The majority of people can take between 1-4 grams at one time safely. But don't use this as a limit, nor a goal! That's because:

  1. All powders have different densities. So 3 grams of one powder could be much larger in size than 3 grams of another.
  2. And each person's body is unique. Yes, some can do larger portions. But some people must do smaller ones. This requires good judgment.

When done correctly, people are amazed at how easy and pleasant they are to swallow. There's nothing like being able to combine all your herbs and supplements into one pape, getting your daily nutrients quickly and all in one go.

You're saying I won't end up with a mouth full of powder? Plus

You’d be surprised at how long a wet pape can stay holding its contents after dipping it in water. This is because the starch in the film slowly turns to a strong gel, and in doing so it actually clumps the outer side of the powder within it, keeping a strong shield from reaching your mouth.

However, there are two different types of powder in relation to using edible films. We offer specific instructions for both types.

How will Blate Papes save me money? Plus

The following idea can be applied to any type of powdered herb or supplement product, but we'll discuss pre-workout formula as our example:

The ridiculous amount of pre-workout products on the market are not only confusing, but they come blended with artificial sweeteners and flavors, unwanted fillers or stimulants... and often, inadequate amounts of active ingredients.

With Blate Papes, you don’t have to bother with trying to decide which existing formula fits your needs best; you can just take the main ingredients that matter for you.

Just get 100% powdered ingredients such as creatine, beta-alanine, citrulline-malate, betaine, agmatine, caffiene, etc, then put them in a Blate Pape, dip it and swallow with water.

You'll get just the effective ingredients at a fraction of the cost of pre-mixed supplements, and without the fillers.

With the same amount you’d spend on a pre-mixed product, you can buy the main ingredients and get enough to last between 6 months to a year with daily usage. You can make it even easier by mixing them together and taking the blend instead of each individual ingredient.

This exact same principle is true of every other product; whether it be a formula, powder, capsules, tablets, etc. Simply buy the main ingredient as a powder and take it in a Blate Pape.

*To see an example of how much money this can save you and how to make your own supplements, read our article, “How to Make Your Own Supplements without Filling Capsules

How difficult is it to use Blate Papes? Plus

It's the easiest way to take powders without tasting them. We compared the top methods on our YouTube Channel here.

And for those who care strongly about what they put into their bodies, they’ll appreciate being able to choose. To do this, we suggest you:

  1. Buy the ingredients you want
  2. Choose your serving size for each ingredient
  3. Mix them in a mixer/blender/bowl using your serving size ratios

This way, whenever you want to take some, put one serving/scoop into a pape, wet it and swallow it with water. No artificial taste, sweeteners, wasted money, time.. nothing! Just the parts that work and nothing else.

Your body will appreciate it. Watch our video instructions of this here

Should I make my own capsules or use Blate Papes? Plus

You could buy single ingredient powders and make capsules. And that's why we offer both capsule-filling devices and capsules!

Both capsules and Blate Papes have their respective advantages.

For example, Blate Papes hold 5x more powder than a capsule, making them quicker and more convenient for taking larger amounts of powder (such as a gram or more at a time). This is why powdered tea users love using Blate Papes, as their dosages are typically between 2-6 grams (that's right, no more orange juice...IYKYK).

Capsules, however, are better for transporting powders in a premade form, as they're harder and more durable. Blate Papes can still be pre-sealed and taken with you though.

Are Blate Papes better than capsules? Plus

Well, that depends whether we're talking about pre-filled capsules, or capsules you fill yourself. Also, the empty capsules you choose make a difference! Most people don't realize capsules are made with processing aids such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, preservatives like potassium citrate, and the worst, artificial colors like red 40 and yellow #6 (known carcinogens)!

Most pre-capsulized supplements come with added fillers like genetically-modified rice flour and magnesium stearate to be capsulized or tablet-pressed. So when this is added to organic powdered herbs and supplements, it's counter-productive.

Companies use statements like, “made with organic ingredients” or “made with non-GMO ingredients,” which only means it has some of these and not 100% of either. But these same companies also sell those products in fully-organic powdered form for much less.

This is why buying pre-capsulized product costs more, gives you less, and can contain questionable ingredients. While pure organic powders cost less and ensure you know what you’re getting.

Blate Papes themselves are made with only what's on the label: Non-GMO Potato Starch. Add this along with your pure-powdered ingredients and you can rest assured your supplements will be healthier than anything you can buy!

But if you choose clean and vetted capsules (like ours are), then Blate Papes and capsules both provide similar usefulness: they deliver the clean powdered substance to your body in an easy and healthy form!

Blate Papes will kick in about 15 minutes faster than capsules, though!

Can Blate Papes be used for anything else? Plus

Other common uses include:

  • Molecular Gastronomy (Scientific Cooking)
  • Quick-dissolving "broth bombs" (see our TikTok for how)
  • Edible Candy Wrap
  • Food Decorations

CAPSULE FILLERS / CAPSULES
How does a capsule-filling machine work? Plus

We explain this in full-detail in our article, “How Does a Capsule Filling Machine Work?”

Or watch our step-by-step instructional videos to see them in action for yourself!

How are your vegan capsules different from all the other "vegan" capsules available? Plus

Our “true vegan” capsules are made from pullulan gum, a naturally-occurring polysaccharide (which is a fancy name for natural carbohydrates). Our pullulan is produced through the natural process of fermenting tapioca starch.

Unfortunately, nearly every other capsule company today sells “veggie capsules” made from what they refer to as “vegetable cellulose.”

Normal cellulose is natural, being just made of plant matter.. such as sawdust. However, the “vegetable cellulose” used in capsule manufacturing is not normal cellulose.

In fact, we strongly believe this is purely false and misleading to customers. “Vegetable Cellulose” implies that it can be found in nature, but it ignores the toxic chemical processing that synthetically modifies normal cellulose into hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (shortened to .. probably so as to not scare the bejeezies out of you when shopping for your health).

HPMC is the true ingredient behind the term vegetable cellulose. It undergoes a rigorous manufacturing process involving the synthetic —not natural— alteration of cellulose. During production, various highly reactive, harmful or toxic substances are used, including methyl chloride, chloromethane, and propylene oxide (which is considered to be carcinogenic). To top it off, the crops used to make HPMC, like cotton and wood pulp, commonly undergo pesticide treatments!

The whole point of encapsulating your own powders is for your health. “Vegetable Cellulose” capsules are anything but healthy. The same holds true for colored capsules, as they’re nearly always made with artificial coloring and additives.

This is why all our capsules are colorless and transparent (although we do have plans of expanding into naturally-colored capsules made with truly natural ingredients).

This is where our “true vegan” capsules take the cake: Not only are they structurally made with the most effective ingredient (pullulan) with an oxygen barrier 9 times stronger than gelatin and 300 times stronger than HPMC vegetable capsules, but they’re also healthier for you, completely natural and safe to produce for the environment.

How are your gelatin capsules different from all the other gelatin capsules available? Plus

As with our vegan capsules, our gelatin capsules are only ever made with purely natural ingredients: 100% bovine gelatin (that’s short for cows... happy cows).

This means we don’t carry colored capsules, which are made with unhealthy artificial additives such as “yellow #6” or “red #40.” Both of which with evidence of being carcinogens. Studies also show they cause ADD/ADHD in children. So much so that these ingredients have been banned in Europe and other countries.

Additionally, our capsules are made with the highest quality, pharmaceutical-grade gelatin.

The sad truth is that most gelatin capsules today are made in China, yet they may even say “made in the USA” on the packaging. How? Well, you can buy your capsules from China, but if you package them here, it gives you the legal right to say they produced here in the US.

That’s not even the worst of it: A significant number of Chinese capsule manufacturers have been caught using industrial grade-gelatin instead of human-grade gelatin in the past.... yeah, that’s serious.

For these reasons, our capsules are NOT made in China. Ours are exclusively manufactured in Brazil, Europe and India.

Always know where your capsules are coming from!

What do the sizes '000-5' mean? Plus

These numbers tell you how much powder or oil your capsules can hold. The larger the number, the smaller the capsule size: Size 000 is the largest capsule size and size 5 is the smallest.

Because each powder has a different density, the amount of powder that can fit in each capsule goes by the powder’s weight. This chart estimates how much powder (in weight) you can fit in each capsule size.

For comparison, at most the largest capsule size, 000, can hold ~1/2 teaspoon of powder or oil. Every capsule size decreases from there. However, one of our Blate Papes can hold much more than the largest capsule, if needed!

What are Blate Papes and why do I get them with my capsule filler? Plus

Blate Papes are thin gel films made of only potato starch and water. Similar to a capsule, they allow you to swallow powdered herbs and supplements without tasting anything.

The difference is in capacity, ease of use, and ease of swallowing. Blate Papes allow you to take and swallow multiple grams of powder at once, while capsules can only hold at most 1 gram of powder. How? When dipped in water, Blate Papes soak into a gel around your powder. This makes the powder soft and delicate, which allows you to easily swallow it at once without tasting anything. It breaks apart instantly in your stomach, so anything you take will kick in about 15-20 minutes faster than with capsules. We include Blate Papes Gel Film Pouches with every order so customers who make their own supplements can see for themselves whether or not they may find them useful for the substances they take.

Blate Papes aren’t meant to replace capsules, but rather they both work better for certain powders or scenarios. It all depends on the needs of the user. For example, speciosa tea users tend to find Blate Papes to be extremely useful, as they have to take 2+ grams at a time, they want it to kick in sooner, and it really tastes bad without them!

Which size do most people buy? Plus

Size 00 is the most common capsule size ordered, followed by size 0. You can fit between 1/2 to 3/4ths a gram of powder into one size 00 capsule, and up to a half gram into a size 0.

Can I use multiple size capsules in one size machine? Plus

Unfortunately, it's not possible to mix different capsule sizes with machine sizes. A size 00 machine can only be used to fill size 00 capsules, size 0 to fill size 0, 000 to 000 and so forth.

This is because nearly every plate on each machine is customized to the diameter of a single capsule size. Changing all these plates would cost the same as buying a second machine, yet it would also mean having to constantly remove and readjust them, making it too difficult and impractical.

However, there are machines like this that exist at the professional level. For example, our 300-hole Professional-Operation Series capsule filling system allows for the removal and changeover of capsule sizes with optional size-change plates.

What's the most amount of powder I can put into one capsule? Plus

This depends on the capsule size you’re using. But with the largest capsule size available, size 000, you can fit at most a half teaspoon of powder, which is usually about 1 gram.

Some people have trouble swallowing capsules or large tablets though, so it’s important to make sure you’re comfortable with the capsule size you’ve chosen, and that the dosages work for the supplements you’re making.

However, if you’re looking to take more powder at once than a gram and you don’t want to taste it, take a look at Blate Papes® Edible Gel Films. They’ll let you easily swallow multiple grams of powder at once.

How much dried mushroom powder fits into each capsule size? Plus

We’re asked this question pretty often. Here’s how much each capsule size holds based on our own testing:

Size 000: 0.91 grams (910mg)

Size 00: 0.62 grams (610mg)

Size 0: 0.45 grams (450mg)

Size 1: 0.34 grams (340mg)

Size 2: 0.25 grams (250mg)

Size 3: 0.18 grams (180mg)

Size 4: 0.14 grams (140mg)

Size 5: 0.09 grams (90mg)

Note: Depending on the type of mushroom and the particle size, this may turn out to be slightly more or less for you. But this is what we found via our own filling.
